a lampworkers glass rod holder… January 31, 2008

i have just started to play around with lampwork bead making, which is the art of creating beautiful unique glass creations…in this case beads. i don’t have a huge amount of glass but enough that makes it difficult to pick colors when i am in the middle of a torch session. instead of just dealing with having to sort through colors i made a rolling organizational pouch system to hold all my glass rods sorted by color. it is a specialty item for sure, but i am sure that i could make the same idea pouch into maybe an apron for sewing supplies or such…hum…may have to play with that idea!

this system is about 17″ tall and has 21 pockets that are 2″ wide and 8″ tall, leaving lots of room to view the glass rods. there is an extra flap of fabric on the inside end to fold over your glass as a protective measure against the glass rubbing. it easily rolls and the long ribbon ties allows you to put as much or as little glass in as you would like. it is pictured here with my glass in it.

oh and this is a dark PURPLE not a blue! my camera just wasn’t agreeing with me!

this is a work in progress…or prototype…lol. i made it with an old tablecloth that is way to thin for the finshed product…need to go through my stash and find a good fabric or combo of fabrics. maybe polkadots…and i am also thinking about adding another layer to the bottom to make the shirt about 2+ inches longer and so that it will have more texture and color to it…maybe in different prints. either way i like the idea but need to work it a bit more to make it look more appropriate…some neckline issues…and the length issue. well for now i am going to keep straightening up my crafts and fabric…i finally found an OK spot to put my shelves so that i can put my fabric out…now just need to finish ironing and folding my fabric…HA!

they are getting much easier to sew as i go, and now that i have the pattern for sure i am just doing them in batches…have a handful finished and a bunch that just need to be top stitched. i made the pattern from a bib of my daughters that i liked and just left room for the seams. i am going to make matching burp clothes…though i dont have any of those to make patterns from…so i will just have to freehand it! the taggie bib was fun to make, i have a matching one in my pile that needs to be top stitched…thats the only grosgrain ribbon i had on hand…so need to buy more so that i can make more taggie bibs. the only thing i need now is either velcro or snaps for the back.
